NFC Coming to UK Retailers this Summer


Thousands of UK shops are gearing themselves up for a new technology, this technology will allow shoppers to buy things with their mobile phones. NFC or Near Field Communication has been around for some time, it allows the customer to pay for their goods using their mobile phone, it is only now that the major retailers have come around to the idea. NFC could be being used in an estimated 40,000 businesses by the end of this year but many retailers will have NFC by the summer. There are a few NFC mobile phones out or due out soon these include the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and the Google Nexus S with rumours that the new Apple iPhone 5 will have it installed also.

MasterCard and Orange are working together on a new NFC ready mobile phone, this will be out by the end of June and a massive Orange competitor O2 are working with Visa to have a phone out by the end of the summer. Shoppers will see many of the contactless pay points popping up all over the UK as NFC enabled mobile phones become more popular. Mobile phone manufacturers, mobile phone operators, retailers and banks are going to be investing millions over the next few years to make this a success.

How does NFC work?

It’s pretty simple really, an NFC chip is inserted inside a compatible mobile phone, the chip is linked to a debit or credit card. The shopper can then swype their mobile phone over the pay stations and the money is is charged to the debit or card. At the moment shoppers will only we able to spend up to £15 per transaction but this many change in time. You are probably wondering how secure NFC is, we have been told it is as secure as any debit or credit card, it’s an easier simpler way to shop. The only downside is NFC could effect small shops and businesses.
