2.2 Froyo – Most Popular Version of Android OS, Reveals Google

There is no doubt that Android is one of the best mobile operating systems at present. In fact, it is arguably the best. Now Google has recently conducted a survey on various Android based handsets manufactured by various companies such as Nokia, Samsung Mobiles, LG Mobiles, HTC Mobiles, Sony Ericsson, etc. The reason for this survey was to find out which version of Android is the most popular one. According to the data that Google collected from this survey, it shows that Android 2.2, which is Froyo, retains the biggest share among all the other versions. In fact, the share of Android 2.2 is remarkably huge at 61.3%. The next largest share belongs to Google Android 2.1 with 29% while version 1.5 and 1.6 follows next with combined share of 7.8%.

Google has already announced the next version of Android, which is Honeycomb v3.0. In the UK market, devices on Honeycomb will arrive by the end of this quarter or the next quarter, while in the US market, Motorola XOOM has already made an appearance with the latest OS. Due to that reason, Android 3.0 adds up to only 0.2% in the Google data. It is expected that Honeycomb will introduce some high-end functionalities to match up against the latest update of iOS.

Google described the reason for collecting this data as the purpose to show developers which Android version works best with the apps. This data report was created by considering the figures up to the second week of March, 2011.

The reason for introducing latest versions of the operating system is to make the usage of mobile phones more functional. In spite of bringing in latest functionalities and applications for the newer versions of Android, it is evident from Google’s data that Android 2.2 is the most popular operating system among the other Android versions.
