BlackBerry to live on in UAE; Ban called off
Research in Motion breathed a sign of relief as a lot of pressure was elevated off them with the United Arab Emirates stating that they would not impose a ban on the BlackBerry.
The BlackBerry has had a tough time in the Middle East with UAE being the first of many nations that have sidelined BlackBerry and its services with reasons of ‘security concerns’. UAE had earlier planned to impose a ban on the services of the BlackBerry because they were concerned about the threat that it may pose to national security.
India too has been breathing heavily on RIM’s already sweating brow and has been waving the threat of a ban at the mobile manufacture.
The BlackBerry was implied to have played a role in the terrorism attack that occurred in Mumbai that left around 166 dead. This has been one of the major reasons for the concern that a lot of nations have been expressing.
One of the major reasons for their concern is BlackBerry’s security encrypted services that allows users security as well as the advantage of privacy. This unique feature that brought BlackBerry on to the market helped it compete against brands like the Apple iPhone and other major players like Nokia and HTC – to name a few.
UAE had earlier threatened to suspend the BlackBerry by October 11, however with frequent talks with BlackBerry makers – Research in Motion (RIM) taking a positive turn, the Government has turned things around. They also stated that they were now confident of RIM’s solutions to the security concerns.
The BlackBerry is very popular in UAE with a lot of young people invited the privacy that they receive through the device. The ban of the BlackBerry would therefore have played as a major let down for RIM and would also have sent a wave of disappointment among the subscribers in the Middle Eastern nation.
