Trend Study: Consumer smart phones overtake business phones


social-media-holding handsWith the smart phone clinching the market’s attention, brands are beginning to shift their focus to the social media trendy customer rather than the business market.

The BlackBerry, which was once a hand set used primarily by business persons and government officials is now including the consumer market niche. Other brands are also following down the similar alley.

The business smart phone that were once known for their security, integration and manageability is now being replaced by smart phones that are focused on consumer market wants of social media and entertainment.

Among eight smart phones that were launched in this month, only one – the Nokia E7 was aimed at the business market. All the rest chose to march down the high road and satisfy the growing demand in the consumer market.

Experts feel that mobile manufacturers are anxious to compete with Apple’s prestigious iPhone, that until recently did not battle any major competition in its particular niche market.

social media phoneHTC followed the success of its device – Desire, with Desire HD and the attractive Desire Z. HTC Vice President John Tong and Chief Marketing Officer John Wang both stated that the previously distinct difference between business phone and consumer phone are diminishing. The business specific target audience has now started to reflect the demands of the consumer market as well and demand more attractive devices and additionally features as well as social media and entertainment facilities.

While the BlackBerry have recently had to compromise on their features of security, Research-in-Motion (RIM) official stated that there would always be a market for business phones, inspite of all the changes that have taken place.

Nokia went on record with comments to the audience at Nokia World 2010 – the venue of the launch of the Nokia E7, stating that they would move from providing exclusive business smart phone, to include the consumer market. This being inspite of the fact that the E7 was one of the only business smart phones to be launched this year.
