Orange to roll on new HD voice call technology
Orange became the first UK mobile firm to use the new AMR-WB technology for higher quality of voice calls.
The Adaptive Multi Rate Wideband (AMR – WB) had recently been adopted as the international standard for all 3 G Mobile networks. Orange has been the first to respond to this. Other networks are bound to follow through soon.
The High Definition voice call band claims to solve the problem of background noise and the ‘crackles and hisses’ that a phone call in the past has had.
The software apparently is not tough to get, as experts told us that all that’s required is an upgrade.
UK is however not the first country to make use of the AMR – WB technology. Moldova and Germany have already started using this technology.
AMR – WB compresses the signal to maximize the band width on the network, thus enabling the sound to be crisper and sharper. This process is referred to as voice codec. The use of voice codec has been in experimentation for quite a while now; however the right balance had not been met so far.
Orange, who recently merged with T Mobile, have been receiving a lot of complains from customers and hence their upgrade to the AMR – WB technology comes as no surprise, and maybe even with a huge sign of relief.
Inspite of the merger of businesses between Orange and T Mobile, the two have not yet merged their networks. T Mobile users would therefore not be using this new voice call technology for the present. However, plans are already underway to ensure that T Mobile users too would be able to use this technology at the earliest.
