android vs symbianThe Android Operating System is the number two OS in 2010, according to a market research report by Garner.

The Android OS came just behind Nokia’s Symbian OS that was recorded as the number one operating system this year. Garner had earlier predicted that Android would come second – but they got there sooner than predicted, almost two years before the Garner prediction.

Garner also predicted that 2010’s number two operating system would probably level by the number one OS – Symbian by as early as 2014 itself.

The research organization also said that there would be a few handful of players who will govern the operating system market in a few years. IDC Research Analysts also agreed with Garner by quoting the same five players as the holders of the industry in the next five years.

Apart from the Symbian and the Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone 7 were the other five major players quoted by both the two research agencies. Garner said that the support that these players received from wireless carriers and other application developers would be of immense value as would the strong brand awareness that they would build with their consumers.

The BlackBerry operating system and Apple’s iOS stood third and fourth in the Garner report for the top operating systems this year. BlackBerry is estimated to record 17.5 per cent of the market sales of around 46.9 million devices. Apple is estimated to sell around 41.4 million devices that made up around 15.4 per cent of market sales.
