RIM confident of a solution for India
Research in Motion (RIM) – BlackBerry makers – promises India a solution to the issue at stake, in order to continue their presence in the BlackBerry popular nation.
India had earlier set BlackBerry a deadline of 31 August to be handed a technical solution by RIM for the encrypted data transfer that the country was objecting to. India had threatened to shut down the services of BlackBerry in the country and ban its use, unless the brand known for its security would come up with a solution. The nation is objecting to the BlackBerry’s messaging and email services.
The BlackBerry is known for its security as the data from users phones are encrypted directly through the device and hence cannot be “spied on” by other influences like the government.
The brand has till date been especially popular for this very trait of its devices that is now being targeted by various countries, including India. They had earlier reached an agreement with the Saudi Arabian government who had demanded that the codes be passed over to them.
The BlackBerry was earlier linked to the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008 that killed 166 people and hence has come under a lot of fire from the different nations. India, being the country where this attack happened is being especially careful and has been doing all it can to strengthen its security. The nation, that celebrated their Independence on Aug 15, also stated that they would go after Google and Skype in order to ensure that the internet was secure.
RIM in comments to the media expressed confidence at arriving at a possible mutually beneficial arrangement with India before their 31 Aug deadline. India is the second largest users of the BlackBerry after China and has over 1 million users. A ban in the nation would spell a huge loss for BlackBerry, even as their shares in the West continued to fall.
