Governments against RIM; Canada – USA to help
Canada play negotiator as they have been reported to make efforts to resolve the BlackBerry issue in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. USA also showed interest in this matter.
The UAE as reports tell have banned the use of BlackBerry’s in the regions, claiming that it was a security risk. They however gave BlackBerry makers – Research in Motion – RIM a chance to work things out with the government by Friday. In comment earlier, RIM claimed that progress had been made, but refused to divulge any more information. The government there has been pressurizing RIM to open its BlackBerry to government scrutiny, which they see as a restriction of their rights.
Some other countries have been sweating over the opinion that the BlackBerry does indeed cause a security risks. India and Lebanon also felt that the BlackBerry encrypted user data could pose a security risk and are demanded to be allowed to see it. India felt that militants could use the service for terrorist activities. With South East Asia currently an active target of terrorists groups, the Republic of India is looking to avoid any risks.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came on record stating that she would be talking to the UAE about this. Canada also hopes to resolve this at the earliest.
All this chaos over the BlackBerry has however affected the RIM drastically. Their shares dipped by 2 per cent in the Nasdaq and Toronto stock exchanges, in response to these circumstances that erupted since the weekend.
The BlackBerry is the only mobile user who manages their own traffic through their device, instead of having the government “shelf” through them.
Lebanon stated that they were concerned about this issue and were looking to hold talks with the BlackBerry masterminds – RIM – at the earliest possible time, and would only make a concrete decision once that has taken place.
