BlackBerry submits to Saudi demands; India still to be dealt with


blackberry in saudiBlackBerry manufacturers, Research in Motion (RIM), have decided to hand over some codes to the Saudi government in order to stay alive in the Middle Eastern BlackBerry popular nation.

Sources close to the talks told the media that RIM were ready to hand over user codes to the government, by sharing the unique pin code for each BlackBerry. This will allow the government to monitor the encrypted messages that are sent via the device.

In the western countries the BlackBerry is popular among business men and government professionals who seek to use the security of the device’s messaging service to their advantage. However in Saudi Arabia, the BlackBerry had stuck a chord with the young singles youth in the nation. One can only speculate the reason for such a trend in the highly restrictive culture in which they live in – where boys and girls cannot mix.

A number of other nations have also implemented a ban on BlackBerry. The UAE has imposed a complete ban on any of the services of the RIM device. India and Kuwait also has expressed their concern.

The BlackBerry was implied to have links in the Mumbai terrorist attack in 2008 that left 166 dead. This has been one of the major reasons for the problems that it has been having in the Middle East, India and North Africa.

A possible ban on BlackBerry’s in India could be a major set back for RIM as India is their second largest user with 635 million subscribers. China is the only country that beats this.

However, BlackBerry’s encrypted messaging service and the security that it provides has been one of the major reasons for its success. Could they readily give this up? What Implications would this have on their growth?
