31 Aug set as deadline for RIM: India

BlackBerry in IndiaIndia issued a deadline of 31 August to Research in Motion (RIM) – the BlackBerry makers – to allow the government to access their service or else they stated that they would shut it down in the country and ban its use.

The BlackBerry is said to have been instrumental in the Mumbai attacks in 2008 that left 166 people dead and the government has reacted strongly to its use, fueled by the concerns voiced by UAE, Saudi Arabia and a few other countries like Lebanon, Algeria and Kuwait.

RIM recently managed to reach an agreement with the Saudi Arabian government that safe guarded the use of its device in the highest BlackBerry using country in the Middle East. India ranks second in BlackBerry usage after China with around a million users or more.

While the government of Saudi Arabia had demanded that they be given access to the messaging services of BlackBerry users in their country, India has demanded access to both the email and messaging services.

BlackBerry, unlike its competitors, encrypts its data and transfers it over its own network through a code, unique to every device, thus one is unable to gain access to the messages and emails sent without the secret codes.

It is for this reason that the device is often used for jobs that require privacy and security in its dealings.

RIM’s share value has also been taking a beating along side this issue that it has been facing with many international governments, who have been demanding that RIM compromise on the one major element that makes a BlackBerry very popular – its security and privacy.
