Blackberry runs into trouble in UAE


Blackberry screenAuthorities in United Arab Emirates alleged that Blackberry mobiles pose a serious national security risk and plans are afoot to strictly regulate and monitor the use of these technically superior devices. The telecom authorities of the predominantly conservative country further asserted that these devices were used beyond the jurisdictions of national legislation.

Although critics term the move as severely regressive and smirking of some hidden agenda, the law enforcing authorities of the country insist that the move is extremely essential.

Reporting without Borders, the independent watchdog of media freedom suggested that UAE although being a country which pressed for heavy deployment of cellular technology, is offsetting the progress by some real regressive steps.

Personal usages of mobile phones and internet have been constant monitored by the telecom regulators of the country.

Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of Blackberry handsets would be approached by the telecom regulators of the country.

Blackberry handsets were released in the markets of the country before Safety emergency and national security legislation came into place in the country in 2007. Thus so far, these handsets were outside the parlance of this law.

RIM declined to comment on this development and chose to play a wait and watch game.

The issue is considered to be a very sensitive one with the UAE authorities involved in a long drawn campaign to enforce the monitoring move.

With pornography and radical anti-Islam messages being major threats, the Government is hell bent this time around to go through with its move.

The progressive lobby considers it as a severe infringement on the personal liberty of the citizens.

Blackberry Messenger which has become an instant hit with the youngsters in UAE is the single largest source of concern for the authorities as they fear the transmissions over this messenger.

Although the internet penetration in the Gulf Country is near about 50 percent but there are severe checks and restrictions on the usage of the same.
