Android Phones rule the roost in UK
Android phones were released in the UK markets as a whip of fresh air amidst the definite disinterest in the mobile phone market which was fast turning into a mundane sector. The technological marvel lived up to its reputation when the second quarter results showed a 300 percent growth in its sales since the beginning of the year.
The share of Android Phones in the UK markets grew by 10.2 percent with it holding a share of 13.2 percent under the current scenario. It had a market share of 3 percent in the beginning of this year. The figures were released after a survey conducted by the retail watcher GFK.
The beginning of the current year witnessed a new trend with a bevy of mobile operators selling mobile devices backed by the Linux based software developed by Google. HTC Desire and HTC Legend are two of the devices which have garnered the attention of the critics after being released with this software.
One out of every 10 contract mobile phones sold in the UK uses this newly developed Linux based software from the coffers of Google.
Galaxy S powered by Android technology which was released by the Japanese major Samsung posed a direct challenge to Apple iPhone which was developed with a lot of expectations.
HTC Desire created a furore in the market with a lot of mobile operators unable to match the demand when it was released in the UK markets in April this year. HTC recorded a 41 percent increase in its sales and it touched the record figure by quite a distance.
With mobiles supporting advanced operating systems which can host independent applications, mobiles sold in this segment reported an increase in sales of over 10 percent from 55 percent to 66.7 percent. In the contract market, mobiles with advanced operating systems hold a 73.5 percent market share.
This new trend confidingly suggests that a burgeoning number of consumers are asking for Android phones just by virtue of its name. With operating systems no longer just a by-product, softwares for mobiles are going to determine the journey of this technology in the days to come.
